- Charles MauchNotes: 021116 Meeting notes: 'Linux in Schools/Education' discussion group Group Members: Rick Brice, Mark Swanicke, Nathan McCoy, Mike Winters, Thomas Sherer. Brainstorming session on how TACLUG can play a role in introducing Linux in local schools. Ideas discussed (in no particular order): 1. Linux in school infrastructure - a. Replacing administrative PC operating system and application software with Linux equivalents for savings of tax dollars by reducing operating expenses. b. Gather donated copies of old Linux distros to donate to school libraries (or to school computer clubs). 2. Add a "Resources for local schools" link on TACLUG website: a. Include a "Why would you want to use Open Source?" FAQ section. b. Break down efforts by applicability to elementary schools, middle schools, & high schools. 3. Identify schools with, or wanting to form, computer clubs - offer Linux as a resource. a. Get involved with a computer club: i. Build credibility with the teacher-coordinator. ii. Springboard into in-class presentations and networking to other teachers, other schools within the district, and eventually cross to other districts. 4. Develop Open Source training modules - use as educational presentations. a. Develop a pre-canned 'project': "How to build a working computer for under $(100) -- legally!" using used parts or used systems and Linux. b. Develop modules on various aspects of Open Source, including the concept of GPL itself. i. Emphasize dual-boot capabilities of Linux installed next to Windows for the faint-hearted who aren't ready to switch over yet. c. Setup & install donated "lab sample" PC at an interested school -- bare-bones system on which to practice installs & configurations. d. Poll for TACLUG members willing to donate an hour or two to make presentations in schools and/or conduct training. 5. Research nation-wide for existing efforts similar to this (e.g., Portland, OR.); a. find out what has worked elsewhere, b. what topics are in demand, c. what formats include (components, layout, presentation elements, etc.). |
